Ask More Questions

The key to increasing sales is to ask more questions. Imagine you are a salesperson asking every customer you meet if they would consider buying from you. Wouldn't that increase your likelihood of closing more sales? The education system usually applauds the student who gives the right answer but ignores the student who asks a lot questions. However, in order to be an effective salesperson and businessperson, it is very important to ask a lot of questions. In some sales processes this is called probing or needs analysis, which is simply asking questions to find out if your product can solve your customer's problem.

The most important question to ask a customer in Laboratory Medicine is: "DO YOU HAVE ISSUES SOURCING A MEDICAL LABORATORY TEST?" I cannot stress this fact any more than to highlight the results that you will receive from asking this question. This is what I call "PRODUCT SOURCING STRATEGY." Secret Societies in Laboratory Medicine

For centuries, secret societies have existed and exerted a mysterious influence on the world and our way of life. Throughout history there has been many conspiracy theories about how these secret societies conduct business and constitute the super rich. Some names which automatically come to mind include: The Illuminati, Freemasons and the Order of Skull and Bones. With the advent of the internet, it makes it hard for these societies to keep real secrets. Books have been written about the secret handshakes, the code words and the hand signals. It is never a good idea to develop a product that there isn't a need for. Hence product sourcing strategies should be used to research the market before creating a product that does not solve people's problems. In my last article, I stated that the key question to ask customers in Laboratory Medicine is "DO YOU HAVE ISSUES SOURCING A MEDICAL LABORATORY TEST?" This is what product sourcing strategy is all about and it makes business much easier than it seems. All you need to do is find a product that customers have difficulty sourcing and then sell that product to the customer. This is the easiest method to use to make more money in business.


Product Sourcing Strategy is like doing a market research to find out what people want then the salesperson goes and find what they want and give it to the customer. That is how you provide value in any marketplace. This approach needs to be taken first before developing a product. How Politics affects Medical Laboratories

Michael Manley, former prime minister of Jamaica, wrote an excellent book called The Politics of Change which was written with two not unrelated objectives in mind. Michael Manley had a desire to transform a post colonial society into a more egalitarian system where there is opportunity for all. Missing from the book is an analysis of imperialism, capitalism, socialism and tribalism and how it has affected the healthcare system. Medical Laboratories which is a crucial department of healthcare have been left on the back burner for decades. This unseen but vital aspect of patient diagnosis and treatment continues to cry out for change from a system of imperialism to one of egalitarianism. This "change" can only be achieved if everyone has access to information about how the healthcare system works. This calls for re-engineering of the healthcare system into a system where the patient is the most important person in healthcare.

Politics has oppressed many industries, such as Laboratory Medicine, and unless Medical Technologists unite and advocate for change it will be just business as usual. Even though Michael Manley's book speaks specifically about the politics of equality and social justice, it is self-evident that the Medical Laboratory has been affected by same. Lack of information especially about the Medical Laboratory has left many patients in the dark for years. The aim of Gav-Med is for all patients to have access to healthcare information about Laboratory Medicine via the internet, social media or any other distribution channel.

First Trillionaires

The first trillionaires in the world will be entrepreneurs who built their businesses around the areas of artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, regenerative medicine, quantum mechanics or augmented reality. Building a business in Laboratory Medicine with a trillion dollar valuation is easy once the business model focuses on one those areas. Artificial Intelligence and robotics will eventually replace the human resources of the Medical Laboratory. A team of devoted scientists who specialize in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) will mold the future of Laboratory Medicine. Learning STEM does not require a college degree but requires intense devotion to learn the principles of engineering and apply them practically to Laboratory Medicine. Such a paradigm shift could have a negative effect on the patient care since the humane aspect of the business model will disappear. The Medical Laboratory would lose its personal "human touch" and become an emotionless set of machinery. 


Creating of new computer processors and the use of data science will transform the entire healthcare industry. Brain-Computer interfaces and Space travel will rely on these biomedical engineering principles to build the medical laboratories of the future. The era of AI, Quantum Mechanics and Gene- editing will destroy jobs and create an economy built with metal, nuts and bolts. In this age of information, technology companies like 'Uber' have disrupted the status quo and made life easier for many. Technology and Mobile Phlebotomy will change the future

Technological advancements, automation and robotics have rapidly been transforming Laboratory Medicine over the years. Doctors and Patients are seeking ways to get lab results quicker and with greater precision. Information systems are now creating networks of several medical companies and data is so easily accessed with just the touch of a button. Information is the final product of medical laboratories and the goal is to provide accurate data to Doctors that they can use to diagnose and treat patients. This is why laboratory information systems have become the pillar on which patient's health information is built.


Genetics and Artificial Intelligence will overtime gain more and more control of Laboratory Medicine which leads to my conclusion that future Medical Laboratory Scientists will have to be trained as Biomedical Engineers.  Another major advancement will be that mobile phlebotomy will eventually become the 'Uber' of Laboratory Medicine. Patients love convenience similarly to other customers of other business entities. Mobile Phlebotomy is basically the Medical Laboratory coming to the patient's home or work to draw their blood. The Mobile Phlebotomy business can be compared to the taxi business in which both business models are saving the customer time and providing convenience and satisfaction.

Medical Laboratory-Debt or Equity Financing

Gav-Med Solutions encourages the selling of your business idea to banks or investors but some MEDICAL TECHNOLOGISTS do not know the difference between selling to a bank and selling to an investor. Selling your idea of starting a medical lab to a bank is referred to as Debt financing while selling your idea to an investor(s) is referred to as Equity financing. In both instances your have to use SALES IN LABORATORY MEDICINE in order to persuade other people to give you their money to fund your dreams. Is it better to use debt or equity financing to start a medical lab? It is going to require bringing money from outside whenever you decide to start a Medical Laboratory. The two primary options are to leverage business debt financing using banks or fundraising using equity investors. You have to determine which method is best for you to start a Medical Laboratory because each can carry its own pros and cons.



DEBT FINANCING

Everyone is familiar with debt whether it is student loan debt, using a credit card, a mortgage or an auto loan.
