The entire universe and the solar system are engineering masterpieces. The component parts and subsystems are will coordinated to carry out the main functions of the complex systems. Of all those complex systems in the universe, Life is the most advanced and complex. Throughout history, from Noah's Ark was built, systems engineering was used to make life possible. The Garden of Eden was a well engineered system which allowed Adam and Eve (the first people) to live happily. Planet Earth provides humans with the basic amenities for survival (food, water, clothing, shelter and sex) in a well engineered system. Life is the most advanced form of technology.

By definition, the goal of systems engineering is to guide the engineering of complex systems. A system is a set of interrelated components working together toward some common objective. Systems engineering focuses on the system as a whole; it emphasizes its total operation. It looks at the system from the outside as well as from the inside. The Medical Laboratory is a system which has people, process, data, software and hardware. Once Medical Laboratories are properly engineered, they can change the world. 

Starship or Noah's Ark: Mars or Heaven

Starship is the creation of a rocket, by Elon Musk, to transport all lifeforms to Mars which sounds like the Noah's Ark story from the Bible. The Question is: "Will all life be destroyed on Earth by AI?" One could say that the story of Noah's Ark is a metaphorical prediction of the existential threat that is facing humanity in the form of climate change and artificial intelligence ("the flood"). The theologians have also theorized that the day we leave Earth we will be going to heaven or hell when Jesus comes. This is referred to as "Judgment Day". This is the unending war of ideologies between religion and science. Engineers believe that we should go to Mars and Theologians believe that we should go to Heaven.

The next major engineering feat is creating forms of life that can exist on other planets. This is called the engineering of biology. After the use of electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering to create Starship, the most important part of the Mars mission is the biological engineering of human beings. Medical Laboratories will have to become the factory for the engineering of life in order to make humans multiplanetary. Life is the most advanced form of engineering.

Laboratory Information Systems of the Future

Laboratory Information Systems will become the center of artificial intelligence in Laboratory Medicine. This ocean of patient data will transform Medical Laboratories into the most intelligent system of modern healthcare. With the rewriting of human genetics and this ocean of patient data, the programming of human biology becomes more of a science fact than fiction. Intelligent Medical Laboratory Information Systems will not only serve as a management tool for labs but a management tool for all aspects of patient care. This is where computers take over Laboratory Medicine and the Physician becomes obsolete. These information systems will become so intelligent that automatically a diagnosis will be provided with every patient data that the system analyzes. The Central Nervous System of the Medical Laboratory will be operated from a computer software whilst the musculoskeletal system will be the use of robotics as a means of mechanics for patient samples. No humans will be required in such a Medical Laboratory since the entire process will be automated with robotics and laboratory information systems.

This is one way in which artificial intelligence and robotics will change healthcare and replace jobs. Such a reality should not be viewed as dystopian or science fiction, but as an opportunity for engineers and other scientists to think of ways to solve bigger problems in Laboratory Medicine. 

Gamification of Medical Laboratories

Gamification is the key to increased customer engagement. In the metaverse, gamers will be able to use virtual worlds to keep people's attention and monetize eyeballs. The ability to gamify an industry using augmented and virtual realities are the future of online sales. To create this new version of the internet, referred to as Web 3.0, marketing will become a game. A game is a structured form of play which is usually done for entertainment and/or education. 

Gamification is a marketing strategy which enhances systems, products, services, and organizations in order to motivate and engage users using the experiences garnered from playing a game. It is used as part of a persuasive system design tool for learning and knowledge retention as well as improving customer retention.

Medical Laboratories will have to use gamification in order to survive in the new world of internet marketing. The metaverse will be in the form of a 3D computer simulation like a video game with parallel universes to the physical one we exist in. Therefore, new salespeople will have to develop a gamers' mindset to market effectively in the metaverse.

Big Pharma and Diagnostics Overlap

The overlap of Big Pharma and Diagnostics is in the field of chemistry. Let us retrace history to the advent of modern pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. Modern pharmaceuticals began with the extraction of morphine from opium poppy plants while modern diagnostics began with analyzing chemicals in urine. The major overlap of these two industries is chemistry. Doctors use morphine to treat severe pain and it is still used for that purpose in hospitals today. Urine dipsticks are still used by Doctors to make chemical analyses of urine easier and quicker which speeds up the diagnoses of patients.  However, the new era of technological revolution will be based on the chemistry of life: DNA. This type of chemistry will fuse diagnostics and pharmaceuticals into one by making diagnosis and treatment tailored to the genetic code of the patient. This will allow scientists to engineer life and create forms of life that do not exist in nature currently. Programming biology will be a greater engineering feat than the programming of computer software. 

The real overlapping of Big Pharma and Diagnostics is in the software of life which we call "Deoxyriboneucleic Acid". This is the cure for all diseases and the birth of superhumans. Welcome to science fact; not science fiction. Medical Laboratories are making science fiction into science fact.

The Metaverse of Medical Laboratories

The future of the internet is the metaverse. This is where we can all teleport into Medical Laboratories all over the world and carry out procedures not available in your physical space. Biomedical Engineers will no longer need to travel to use a chemistry analyzer, they can simply own one in the metaverse. This idea supports decentralized, persistent online 3-D virtual environments which will be available through smartphones and laptops. Its infrastructure requires connectivity based on the use of a network of servers powered by computers.

This is where a lot of consultations and education about Medical Laboratories will take place. The internet serves as the first iteration of the metaverse. Access points for the metaverse includes general purpose computers and smartphones. This is the rise of individual ownership on the internet.

The final TECH is the engineering or programming of life. Imagine being able to change your genetics like how you change the operating system on your computer or update an application on your android phone. This could happen in real time using a genetic compiler that changes your human biology in an instant. This invention will take all the foundations of nanomedicine and manipulate biological machines inside your cells, at the DNA level, to create a new YOU. You can change your IQ, Eye Color, Height, Weight, Skin Color and Texture, Hair Color and Texture, and/or your health by programming your biology. Instead of programming computers which we do now in the software revolution, we will be programming our biology in the living software revolution. The Medical Laboratory has a major role in the creation of this final TECH which is YOU. Genetics and Molecular Diagnostics is the fastest growing discipline of Laboratory Medicine and has the potential to create the most advanced form of technology that the human race will ever experience.
